Fisetin Restores Malfunctioning Carbohydrate Metabolism

Tuesday, December 13, 2011  -  Byron J Richards, CCN

Fisetin, a unique polyphenol flavonoid found in strawberries and other fruits and vegetables, is adding to its science showing that it can help regulate blood sugar.  Previously I reported that fisetin can reduce the caramelizing effect of sugar on body structures known as advanced glycation end products – a major issue for type 2 diabetics and general aging for everyone.  A new study shows that fisetin can restore the metabolism of carbohydrates by correcting key metabolic enzymes that are malfunctioning.  This finding could help offer a path to solution for many people who struggle to incorporate carbohydrates in their diet without gaining weight.

Strawberries are Good for Cholesterol Health in Overweight People

Wednesday, December 07, 2011  -  Byron J Richards, CCN

Overweight individuals consuming strawberry powder extract over a 3-week period reduced total cholesterol while boosting the size of LDL particles (too many small LDL particles are risky for cardio health).  The U.S. Department of Agriculture researchers stated their study suggests “a potential role for strawberries as a dietary means to decrease obesity-related disease.”

Lipoic Acid Improves Blood Sugar Levels in Type 2 Diabetic Patients

Tuesday, December 06, 2011  -  Byron J Richards, CCN

A randomized, placebo-controlled study for 8 weeks in type 2 diabetic patients has found that taking 300 mg per day of lipoic acid lowered fasting blood sugar levels, reduced insulin resistance, and boosted the function of the all-important glutathione antioxidant enzyme.  It has been previously established that the anti-oxidant properties of lipoic acid at the dose of 600 mg per day helps nerves and neuropathy in type 2 diabetic patients.  This study adds to the emerging body of science showing that lipoic acid can not only protect the body but can also help improve metabolism in people who have malfunctioning metabolism.  Other recent metabolic research demonstrates that lipoic acid can lower triglycerides, improve insulin signaling, boost muscle metabolism of calories, and activate fat cell metabolism

Chromium Improves Insulin Sensitivity & Lowers Body Fat in Overweight Children

Saturday, December 03, 2011  -  Byron J Richards, CCN

As children gain weight they stress insulin function in their bodies which leads to further complications and tends to lock in weight gain as well as a path towards increased disease risk at an early age.  A new study in children ages 9-12 has shown that 400 mcg of chromium per day over a 6 week intervention was able to improve insulin function and lower their percentage of body fat – helping to move them in the right metabolic direction

Protein Activates Wakefulness and Calorie Burning

Thursday, December 01, 2011  -  Byron J Richards, CCN

Scientists have discovered that protein turns on specialized brain cells that keep you awake, keep your metabolism humming along, and keep you motivated to accomplish goals. In contrast, carbohydrates without enough protein do not activate these brain cells which may result in a tired head and body and potential weight gain due to sluggish metabolism.

Snacking Interferes with Weight Loss

Wednesday, November 30, 2011  -  Byron J Richards, CCN

Postmenopausal overweight and obese women who snacked between breakfast and lunch during a calorie-restriction weight loss program lost less weight than those who did not snack. This study demonstrates that snacking, at a minimum, creates metabolic inefficiency. Of course, snacking in conjunction with calorie excess is killing Americans at and early age and causing rampant disease. This is more data supporting the Five Rules of The Leptin Diet – rules you should live by for optimal health.

Low Fiber Sets Teens On the Path of Metabolic Disease

Sunday, November 27, 2011  -  Byron J Richards, CCN

A new study analyzing the diets of American teens has shown that low fiber intake is the key factor associated with the development of the metabolic syndrome (expanding waistline, high blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar), placing them on the path for cardiovascular disease. Not surprisingly to me, but apparently troubling for dieticians, foods high in cholesterol and saturated fat were not linked to developing metabolic disease in this study.

Green Tea as a Potent Weight Loss Nutrient

Wednesday, November 02, 2011  -  Byron J Richards, CCN

The scientific community now widely accepts that green tea is a powerful tool to improve metabolism in a way that is supportive of weight loss. Numerous human studies over the past decade have proved the point. I have reviewed these in two earlier articles, The Effects of Green Tea on Weight Management and Green Tea Extract Supports Weight Loss.  Scientists are continuing to unravel exactly how green tea works its magic and several new studies shows that it activates genes associated with fat burning while also helping to reduce absorption of fat from the digestive tract.

Fiber, Fish Oil & Exercise Boost Adiponectin

Tuesday, October 25, 2011  -  Byron J Richards, CCN

Adiponectin, like leptin, is a hormone secreted from your white adipose tissue. It is a powerful hormone that regulates insulin function and reduces inflammation in your circulatory system. As your weight goes up your adiponectin goes down, making you more at risk for insulin resistance, continued weight gain, risk for type 2 diabetes, and increased amounts of cardiovascular inflammation. While a variety of nutrients have been shown to support healthy levels of adiponectin, a new study points out that the basics of increased fiber, fish oil intake, and regular exercise all help raise your adiponectin levels.

B12 Deficiency During Pregnancy Increases Risk for Insulin Resistance in Child

Wednesday, October 12, 2011  -  Byron J Richards, CCN

The importance of folic acid during pregnancy is well known. The adequacy of vitamin B12 during pregnancy is also quite important, as vitamin B12 is needed for nervous system health as well as the proper assembly of proteins that make up the physical body of the child. Compromised B12 status during pregnancy is now related to an increased risk for insulin resistance, and thus obesity, in one’s child.
