Lipoic Acid and ALC Rejuvenate Muscle and Liver Energy Production
Wednesday, July 13, 2011 - Byron J Richards, CCNR-Alpha lipoic Acid and Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALC) show synergistic activity towards boosting the energy production in cells. This information can be used to improve your ability to exercise or to help correct serious metabolic problems such as type 2 diabetes. Several recent studies illustrate how these nutrients work to enhance your production of energy.
In the first study, rats were supplemented with ALC, R-alpha Lipoic Acid, and several other nutrients and made to perform exhaustive exercise. They were compared to a group of sedentary rats and another group that did the exercise without any nutrients. The nutrient-supplemented rats1 ran much further before reaching exhaustion during each exercise session over a four-week period. Their enzymes that cleared lactic acid worked better as did their antioxidant defense systems. A specific analysis of the energy-producing mitochondria within muscle cells showed that actual biogenesis was taking place – meaning key parts of the energy-producing systems had grown to a fitter state of function.
Another study tested R-alpha Lipoic Acid2, ALC, nicotinamide, and biotin in diabetic rats over a three-month period. At the start of the study the rats had signs of extensive metabolic damage in their livers reflected by abnormal mitochondria, excessive free radical damage, and increased rates of cell death. By the end of the study the nutrients had largely corrected these problems while promoting mitochondrial rejuvenation. The nutrients were superior to the diabetes drug Actos.
These new studies are the latest in a significant body of research showing that ALC, R-alpha lipoic acid, and other synergistically acting nutrients, can have a potent effect on restoring damaged energy producing systems in cells, thereby offering the potential to help correct serious metabolic problems.
