Whey Protein is a Superior Metabolic Activator

Thursday, March 10, 2011  -  Byron J Richards, CCN

A new human study shows that whey protein, compared to soy or casein proteins, is a superior metabolic fuel that enhances thermogenesis.  Thermogenesis in response to the diet shows the calorie burning potential of a type of food. In other words, if you eat the same number of grams of whey protein, soy protein, or casein then your body responds better to whey.

This means that the calorie content of the food is only one aspect of it in terms of weight loss or weight gain. Whey protein also improved tolerance to carbohydrates by helping the pancreas make insulin better, lowering the glycemic response by 32%.  This means whey protein intake helps guard against insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes by helping your pancreas perform better.

The study was based on protein intake at 50% of calories in a test meal, along with 40% carbohydrates and 10% fat.  This is what you get when you make a whey protein smoothie using your favorite beverage along with a serving of fruit (either blended into the smoothie or eaten at the same meal).

This study is further proof of the metabolic advantages of whey protein as a weight management tool.
